The vineyard of Lorraine used to be very extensive before successive wars, the regions industrialization and the Phylloxera between the mid 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Today the vineyard covers 150 hectares, compared to 34,000 hectares in 1833.
The soils are mainly clay-calcareous, and the vines benefit from a semi-continental climate. The red grape varieties are Pinot Noir and Gamay, the white wine is produced from Auxerrois and Chardonnay.
95% of the wines produced in the region are rosé or red, only 5% are dry white wines.
The Côte de Toul is the most famous appellation.
