At the end of the 80's the phenomenon of the Super-Tuscans emerged. Red wines were produced from French grape varieties instead of the Italian Sangiovese grape, which is typical for the Chianti region. Super Tuscan wines were originally mostly IGT wines, but due to their high quality they have reached the DOCG status (e.g. Sassicaia or Ornellaia).
