Viticulture in Austria dates back to antiquity. 80% of the production is white wines. In the west and southwest of the country, the climate is too rough in the Alps, the vineyards are located mainly in the east of the country. With strong climatic changes and a lot of calcareous and sandy soils, the Austrian wines are characterized by an excellent freshness and enable a wide range of food / wine combinations. The best-known grape variety is Grüner Veltliner, which produces dry, aromatic, fresh and light white wines. The best reds are mainly Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch.
