Germany >> Nahe >> Rotwein

With 4,135 hectares under vines, the Nahe region is one of the smaller growing areas in Germany and is undoubtedly one of the most interesting due to its geological diversity of soils.
Near Wallhausen one finds Devonian rock (phylite, green slate and quartzite), a classic Riesling location. Very often there are also rocks of the Rotliegen, among them the highly dragged up plaice of carboniferous origin near Niederhausen are extraordinary. The weathered volcanic soils of Schloßböckelheim are perfect for Riesling cultivation. In almost all locations you will find sea sand and gravel, loess and loess loam.
Over a hundred years ago there was a kind of layer classification at the Nahe, which was based on a three-step land tax of the respective parcel. The result was documented in 1901 in the "Nahe-Weinbaukarte für den Regierungsbezirk Coblenz".
This historical map served as the basis for the VDP's vineyard statute of 1997. Only Riesling wines from the best vineyards with vineyard names may still be offered. All other grape varieties must be marketed without vineyard names, even if they are planted in one of the "Grand Cru" vineyards. Small yields do the rest.
