Beaujolais is a French wine produced just north of Lyon. The name derives from the family of the Beaujeu, who ruled in the region from 957 to 1400.
The red wine is produced from the Gamay grape and the white wine from Chardonnay.
The Gamay accounts for 97% of the production. The soils are granitic, sand and slate in the north where the Beaujolais Crus are produced and clay and limestone in the south.
The region with its 15700 ha of vineyards is divided in three quality levels or denomination: Beaujolais and Beaujolais Supérieur, Beaujolais Villages and the 10 Beaujolais Crus: Chiroubles, Chenas, Fleurie, Julienas, Saint-Amour, Regnié, Morgon, Moulin à Vent, Brouilly, Côte de Brouilly.
Beaujolais is best known for its "Beaujolais Nouveau", a wine from the same year, which is launched every year on the third thursday of November. A part from this well known wine, there are many small wineries nowadays producing high quality wines with lots of caracter in all three denominations.
