With over 3 million hectolitres, Abruzzo is the fifth largest wine producer. When you talk about Abruzzo wines, the first thing you think of is Montepulciano d'Abruzzo (for the red wines) and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo (for the white wines). The cooperatives still have the upper hand in wine production, but a handful of smaller winegrowers have proven that the Montepulciano grape can produce excellent wines.
